Why are Beltsville Turkeys a better choice for pasture rearing than the easy to find commercial white turkeys?

BSW turkeys are strong, active and inquisitive foragers with healthy immune systems, and charming, gentle personalities. The commercial poults are delicate, and require drugs and specialized environmental control to avoid heavy mortality.

The commercial turkey's growth is so rapid, they barely move away from the food trough where life is just eat and poop.

The BSW on the other hand, can make good use of pasture, but are so people oriented, they will hang around the homestead by choice, requiring only predator protection. They are ideally suited to extensive rearing systems on pasture as they are not genetically programmed to grow at an unnatural rate, and their skeletal and cardiovascular systems can support healthy development. They require no drugs and no more brooding than chickens.

Their slower, natural growth rate means a superior tasting bird, with richer, firmer meat, and a pleasant, comfortable life of daily adventure for the growing poults. They are very fertile, unlike the commercial turkeys, which are so deformed by their mammoth breasts that they must be artificially inseminated, so you can hold over the best of your birds, and breed a flock of your own.
